Computer-Aided Drafting is most frequently used when I am in the process of space planning and refining sketches.

  • With AutoCAD, I produce 2D plan-view and elevation drawings in shorthand and to scale. I omit the use of AutoCAD when I have enough information to begin modeling in 3D.

Shorthand

Drawing in shorthand is done to communicate the size and essential shape of a component. Details on a shorthand drawing are included for emphasis. Shorthand drawings are refined once selections are finalized.  Drawing in shorthand simplifies the editing process.

With BIM softwares Revit and Sketchup, I model scenes and set the stage for design board selections. Modified components are used as stand-ins for selections when a manufacturer’s BIM content is unavailable, officially and unofficially. Models are to be presented in tandem with a design board for cross referencing.

  • With Revit, I create a 3D model in a 2D view. I use it to lay out construction drawings and prepare client presentations. Resources available are most suitable for commercial projects. Generic models can be downloaded from online libraries and modified to stand in for specified furniture in the residential setting. Revit has built-in rendering capabilities and a flexible properties manager. Photorealistic renderings can be produced at 600 dots per inch.

No Revit Model was available for the orange ghost-chair. To stand in for the selection is a chair that is similar in form. It has been modified in color and finish to imitate the actual selection. A model such as this is comparable to a second-team rehearsal

  • With SketchUp, I extrude 2D drawings into a 3D model. I use it to prepare views for client presentations. There are countless creations in the 3D Warehouse to be used in residential and commercial projects. A SketchUp model is more malleable than a Revit model, and the process of placing objects is less rigid. External plugins are required to create photorealistic renderings, which are more demanding on computer resources.

The window overlapping the SketchUp model is a preview of  V-Ray rendering. A subscription is required to perform the rendering process.

  • I use Procreate (an iOS application) to produce sketches, edit photos, arrange design boards, and manually render technical drawings. With digital painting techniques, I use Procreate to enhance and make corrections to images.
